TOWSON, Md. – A back-and-forth game came to a painful conclusion for the Goucher men's soccer team this afternoon, with a last-minute penalty kick sending the Gophers to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Scranton.
Colin McFadden scored the game-winner for the Royals (6-1-3, 1-1 Landmark). Goucher falls to 6-4-1 (1-1 Landmark) with the defeat.
Scranton held an 8-4 shots in an evenly played first half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. Kevin Tonkovich (Lacey, N.J./Lacey Twp.) had Goucher's best scoring chance in the opening 45, but his 17th minute shot was stopped by a diving Eric Hintz.
Bill McGuiness opened up the scoring for the Royals 11 minutes into the second half, taking a pass at the top of the box and nailing a low liner into the right corner of the goal.
The Gophers responded immediately, however, with George El-Khoury (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) heading in a free kick from Tonkovich just 60 seconds after Scranton's goal to level up the score. The goal was El-Khoury's second of the season, and his fifth as a Gopher, while Tonkovich recorded his third assist of 2013.
Both goaltenders stood strong for the remainder of regulation, with Nicholas Stolarz (Clark, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) making a diving save on McGuiness in the final two minutes to ensure that the game would go to overtime.
Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) registered the only shot of the first overtime period, sending an effort high with 22 seconds remaining.
Scranton had a pair of shots in the first nine minutes of double overtime, but the game appeared to be heading towards a draw. Goucher, though, was called for a hand ball in the box off of a corner kick in the final 30 seconds, and McFadden ended the game at 109:28.
The Royals outshot Goucher 19-8 for the contest, and they also had an 8-3 edge in corners. Tonkovich led the Gophers with three shots, while Stolarz made five saves in goal.
Goucher returns to the pitch at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a 7 p.m. matchup against Ursinus (5-5-1).
