TOWSON, Md. — Two goals scored in a span of 52 seconds early in the second half turned a slim 1-0 lead for Goucher into a robust three-goal advantage and the Gophers went on to claim their third non-conference victory of the season today by beating Cairn, 5-1, on Beldon Field.
It was a goal by Drew Afromsky (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde) that put head coach Bryan Laut's squad up 1-0 just 3:22 into the contest. Afromsky knocked in the deflection of a shot by Jeremy Hardy (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Beacon School) that had been saved by the opposing keeper.
The score didn't change again until Ellis Martin (Verona, N.J./Verona) set up a goal by Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls Central School) at 53:42 that gave the Gophers (3-5-1) a two-goal lead. Less than a minute later, it became 3-0 thanks to a goal by Konrad Bulanowski (Philadelphia, Pa./The Shipley School), who got a touch on a perfectly placed free kick by Dalen Thompson (Maplewood, N.J./Columbia).
The Highlanders (4-5) made in 3-1 with a goal by Connor Williams in the 65th minute, but the home team got that one rback in the 68th minute when Phillips headed in a free kick from Sam Bloxam (Center Valley, Pa./Faith Christian Academy).
The final goal of the contest was scored by Marco Grotti (Milmay, N.J./Millville) at 68:53 and assisted by Ryan Matthews (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central).
The Gophers finished with a 16-3 edge in shots.
Goucher's next game is Saturday in Reading, Pa., against Alvernia. It's scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
