Gophers Score First, Shoremen Answer with Three

TOWSON, Md. — For the first time all season, Goucher lost when it scored the first goal of a game. Andrew Marcantonio (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) provided the Gophers with a 1-0 lead over Washington (Md.) when he tallied his first goal of the season in the 38th minute, but the Shoremen responded with three goals in the second half to pull out a 3-1 victory.

Evan Phillips (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls Central School) picked up an assist on Marcantonio's goal for the cross he sent from right to left into the box which the junior forward headed in. The goal was the third of Marcantonio's career.

Cody Gray scored the first two Washington (Md.) goals, both unassisted. His blast from five yards out at 50:54 created a 1-1 tie; he put the Shoremen (7-5) ahead at 62:50 when, after dribbling past a defender, he knocked one past the keeper, who had come out on the play.

The visiting team's third goal was scored by Chris Lewandowski at 78:00, assisted by Dimitri Kaliakin.

The Shoremen, who are now 5-2 against non-conference opponents this season, finished with a 25-7 advantage in shots.

"I thought we played well in stretches of the game today," said head coach Bryan Laut. "However, you have to give Washington College a ton of credit for coming out and playing an intelligent and effective second half. We are still young and are continuing to learn and grow every game and this match, while it did not end the way we wanted, will help us for this weekend."
