ST. DAVIDS, Pa. — Goucher ran into an opponent this afternoon that made it through the first 15 games of the season undefeated and was still smarting from a 1-0 loss to Wilkes just three days ago. A pair of goals midway through the first half is all that Eastern could manage, but they were enough for lift the Eagles past the Gophers, 2-0.
Both goals were scored by Colin Furlong. The first one at 26:56 was set up by a cross from Hunter Rosenberg; the second one at 32:28, followed a save by Goucher goalkeeper Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) on a shot by Jacob Myers, but Furlong banged in a loose ball before it could be cleared.
The Eagles (14-1-2) outshot head coach Bryan Laut's squad, 15-2, in the first half, but the edge was only 7-3 the rest of the way. Hendry made a total of six saves, five of them in the first half.
There were only two shots on goal the entire second half, one by each team.
The Gophers (6-10-1) are one of three teams battling for the one remaining unclaimed spot in the Landmark Conference playoffs next month that will be filled on Saturday. Goucher must win its game against Susquehanna to stay in the mix.
"Our first half today was not our best performance," Laut commented after the game. "We came out and played too passive. Full credit to the guys for regrouping at halftime and finishing strong. Hopefully we can continue to build on the second half play and put together a solid 90 minutes this Saturday in what is our biggest game of the year."
