BALTIMORE, MD. - On a day on which it honored its six seniors – Ryan Belluch (Reading, PA), Jeremy Hardy (Brooklyn, NY), Michael Layer (Columbia, SC), Andrew Marcantonio (Philadelphia, PA), and Ajito Odolla (Baltimore, MD), and Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, NY) - Drew University bested the Gophers with three second half goals and won 4-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Drew jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Andy Imoh (Sugar Land, TX) at the 30:47 mark of the first half. Goucher freshman Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, CA) single-handedly powered a ball past the goalie and a defender to knot the score at 1-1 four minutes later. The half ended in a 1-1 tie. That remained the score until the 78 minute mark when Imoh scored again unassisted. Drew scored twice more in the closing minutes, at 84:24 and at 87:50, to create the final 4-1 score.
INSIDE THE BOX: Goucher was outshot by Drew 8-5 in the first half but forced Drew's goalie to make 3 saves. Drew stepped up their pace of play in the second half when they took 13 shots to Goucher's 3.
BETWEEN THE POSTS: Senior goalkeeper Michael Layer (Columbia, SC) gave it everything he had but faced a barrage of shots from Drew, 8 in the first half and 13 in the second half. He finished the day – as did Drew's goalie - with 4 saves.
IT"S A WRAP: Gopher finished their 2016 season with an overall record of 6-7-5, and finish 1-4-2 in the Landmark Conference. This leaves the Gophers in sixth place overall. Drew finishes their season 10-4-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the Landmark, good enough for second place.
