Three different goal-scorers chipped in to give the Gophers (3-2-0, Landmark 0-0-0) their third consecutive win and clean sheet over the Rosemont Ravens on Saturday afternoon.
TOWSON, Md. – Three different goal-scorers chipped in to give the Gophers (3-2-0, Landmark 0-0-0) their third consecutive win and clean sheet over the Rosemont Ravens on Saturday afternoon.
The opening half saw little action on the stat sheet, but both teams were aggressive, resulting in 21 fouls over 45 minutes of play. Goucher put the first shot on goal in the 30th minute when first-year Vinay Chandra (Clarksville, Md.) ripped a point-blank shot at the keeper. His opportunity was denied.
Just over a minute later, fellow first-year Luke Newsome (Washington, D.C.) tried his luck, but to no avail. At the end of the half, the score remained at nil-nil.
Finally, in the 51st minute, sophomore Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif.) broke the silence and buried a shot into the back of the net. Fellow sophomore Aiden Devaney (Baltimore, Md.) earned the assist via a high long ball that slipped through the keeper's hands. Cohen wasted no time scoring as the ball landed at his feet.
Only 62 seconds later, Newsome scored his first career goal when he dribbled through the defense and keeper to finish a point-blank shot on an open net.
Rosemont attempted to cut the lead in half with back-to-back opportunities by Sal Turelli. However, junior goal keeper Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.) was not going to be denied a third consecutive clean sheet.
The Gophers put a nail in the coffin in the 63rd minute when junior Konrad Bulanowski (Philadelphia, Pa.) chested a bouncing ball from Newsome passed the near-side post into the goal. Goucher dominated possession for the remainder of the game.
Hendry earned his third win and clean sheet of the season, collecting two saves in the game. Hendry currently ranks third all-time at Goucher in clean sheets (10). The current record holder is Tom Feuerstein '06.
First-year Hunter Opdyke supplemented Hendry in the goal. Sean Iannelli played a majority of the game in the goal for the Ravens, making three saves and allowing two goals. He earned his second loss of the season.
Goucher travels on Wednesday to take on Alvernia at 4:30 p.m. in Reading, Pa.
