READING, Pa. – The Goucher College men's soccer team (3-3-0, Landmark 0-0) was on the losing end of a match for the first time in over a week, falling to Alvernia University 1-0.
The entire game was a defensive battle, with neither team gaining a significant advantage. The winning strike for Alvernia came in the 7th minute when Damien Jennings knocked a shot in after receiving a pass from Gabe Hochenberger.
First-year Hunter Opdyke (Salisbury, Md.) only saw three more shots on goal the remainder of the half. Goucher was unable to put a shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
The Gophers finally threatened in the 82nd minute when first-year Luke Newsome (Washington, D.C.) ripped a shot on goal. However, Zach Rider was in goal for the Golden Wolves to deny the scoring chance.
Alvernia put one more shot on goal in the 87th minute before time ran out.
Head Coach Bryan Laut said the following about the game, "I thought we put in a good effort and performance today. We made a mistake in the beginning of the game and got punished by a good team. I felt after that we were right there and just couldn't make the break through to even things up."
Opdyke finished the game with six saves in his first start. Rider completed the game with one save. Junior Korad Bulanowki (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the team with 2 shots.
The Gophers return home on Saturday, September 16th to take on Shenandoah University at 12 p.m. on Beldon Field.
