Men's Soccer's First Conference Match Ends in Deadlock, 2-2
Goucher College men's soccer (4-3-2, Landmark 0-0-1) tied Juniata College (0-5-3, Landmark 0-0-1) in their first conference matchup of the season, 2-2.
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College men's soccer (4-3-2, Landmark 0-0-1) tied Juniata College (0-5-3, Landmark 0-0-1) in their first conference matchup of the season, 2-2.
Juniata found twine first with five minutes left in the first half. First-year Jacob Grove scored an unassisted goal from 15 yards out. He collected the ball inside the eighteen and ripped a shot on goal that was deflected off a defender and past the diving Goucher keeper.
The Eagles scored again quickly within the first five minutes of the second half. First-year Charlie Kovach carried the ball in from midfield and chipped it around Goucher's junior goalkeeper Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.)
Goucher made adjustments and responded 12 minutes later with a goal of their own. Senior Drew Phillips (Hoosick, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the season after he received a pass, dribbled past two defenders, and hammered a shot past Eagles sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Yeich, making the score 2-1.
Phillips didn't wait long to score his second goal of the season. Junior Konrad Bulanowski (Philadelphia, Pa.) crossed the ball in from a corner and Phillips used his head to tie up the game 2-2. Phillips tallied three headers on goal out of his five total shots on goal.
Goucher and Juniata battled it out for two overtime periods, with both sides making valiant efforts to win the game. However, neither could break the deadlock and the game finished as it started, tied.
Head Coach Bryan Laut said, "The team made some mistakes and got punished for it." He followed up with, "full credit to the guys to continue to battle and finding ways to get results during the game."
Hendry made six saves out of the eight shots he faced during today's match. Yeich notched a game-high nine saves.
Goucher outshot 24-16 and dominated on corners, 14-3.
Goucher's next match is Tuesday in Frederick, Md. against Hood College at 7 p.m.
