Men's Soccer Upends Susquehanna in Overtime
The Goucher College men’s soccer team (6-3-2, Landmark 1-0-1) earned its first win over Susquehanna in program history, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday evening.
SELINSGROVE, Pa. – The Goucher College men's soccer team (6-3-2, Landmark 1-0-1) earned its first win over Susquehanna in program history, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday evening.
Junior Konrad Bulanowski (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Gophers with two goals, including the game winner in the 95th minute to push Goucher to its first conference win of the 2017 season.
Susquehanna lit up the scoreboard first, finding the back of the net in the 15th minute when Alex Graul and Ryan Cronin met up for a goal. Goucher answered back with a shot on goal via Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif.) only seconds later. However, his attempt was parried away to safety, keeping the Riverhawks in control.
The first half saw little action following the Riverhawks pull-ahead goal, and ended with Susquehanna up 1-0.
Goucher tied the game up early in the second half when junior Moibanda Rogers (Leicester, England) found Cohen who buried a shot and gave the Gophers life. Susquehanna took control for the net 20 minutes before scoring again in the 81st minute. Graul added his third point of the evening to the scoresheet when he assisted a goal by Chris Naiman.
The Gophers were not undone by the Riverhawk strike, as they answered back only 1:12 later when Bulanowski netted his first goal of the night following a shot on goal by Rogers. Senior Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) was credited an assist on Bulanowski's goal.
Goucher threatened in the 88th minute when Bulanowski sent in a corner kick that was headed wide by Phillips. As the clock ran down to zero, the game remained tied, 2-2.
Only four minutes into the first overtime period, Goucher was awarded a penalty kick. Bulanowski lined up and hammered a shot into the back of the net to seal the deal for the Gophers' first Landmark win of the season and three points toward the standings.
Head coach Bryan Laut said, "You have to give our guys a ton of credit. They just keep perservering. Down a goal to a very good Susquehanna team at a difficult venue and they just kept fighting. I appreciate how much they work and compete and am proud of the big 3 pts we got tonight."
Seven yellow cards and one red card were awarded in the game. Junior Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.) played all 94:18 in goal and earned his fifth win of the season with six saves. Susquehanna's Matt Ellingworth had three saves in the game.
The Gophers hit the pitch on Wednesday when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Catholic at 4 p.m.
