TOWSON, Md. - After playing 110 minutes of soccer the Goucher College men's soccer program (6-6-5, Landmark 1-3-2) battled the Washington College Shoremen to a 0-0 draw tonight, making this the eighth game the team has gone into overtime in the 2017 season, and the fifth occasion they have gone into double overtime.
While a 0-0 draw is not necessarily a game you walk away from impressed by both offenses, these two teams generated a combined total of 49 shots. Each squad had chances to score, and the goalies and the defenses were up to the challenge tonight.
The Gophers dominated the first half statistically, outshooting the Shoremen 9-2. The majority of Goucher's shots came from three individuals: junior Konrad Bulanowski (Philadelphia, Pa.), senior Drew Philips (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Ca).
Washington College turned up the intensity during the second half, outshooting the Gophers 19-7. While defense ruled the day for both sides, the back four defenders for the Gophers, senior Scott Mt. Pleasant (Clifton Park, N.Y.), sophomore Aiden Devaney (Baltimore, Md.), sophomore William Jenkins (Fairfield, Pa.), and first-year Zach Brombalow (Eldersburg, Md.) held the Shoremen in check and limited their ability to put those shots on the goal.
The shots in overtime were almost dead even. The best chance came at the end of the first overtime period when junior Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.) made a save with one-second remaining that ruined the Shoremen's bid to end the contest, and Jenkins followed that up by clearing a ball off the goal line as time expired, keeping the Shoremen off the scoreboard.
Goucher's starting goalkeeper, Hendry, had nine saves during the course of the match.
The Gophers travel to Madison, N.J. on Saturday, October 28th to play their final game of the 2017 season when they take on Drew University, the number one seed in the Landmark Conference, at 4:00 pm.
