SELINGROVE, Pa. – Matthew Malhenzie (Etters, Pa./Red Land) scored the decisive tally for his first collegiate goal in the 67th minute to lift Goucher College past Susquehanna University 2-1 in Landmark Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
Malhenzie, who attempted five shots on the year coming into Saturday's match, twinkled the twine for the game-winner when his shot bounced off the River Hawks netminder and into the netting at 66:33 to break a 1-all standstill.
Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) got the scoring started for the Gophers when he knocked a loose ball on the right into the goal line at the 4:25 mark for a 1-0 lead. Susquehanna would tie the match at 1 in the 21st minute before Malhenzie's heroics sent Goucher home with its third-straight win against the Riverhawks.
Joe May (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) made five saves for his first collegiate win. May came up big in the 71st minute when he saved a penalty kick to keep the one-goal edge. In addition, in the final 70 minutes of the match, the freshman saw six shots, made two saves, the defense blocked one and had a little luck when a shot hit off the post to help the Gophers earn their first conference win of the year.
Cohen now leads the team with four goals and two assists for 10 points in 2019. The senior has 24 tallies and 12 assists for 60 points in his four-year career.
