It was a hot day today at Beldon field as the Gophers fell 3-1 to the visiting Shoremen of Washington College. The Gophers gave up a quick 6th minute goal to the Shoremen, though they responded well. Goucher held the visitors scoreless for the rest of the half courtesy of good goal keeping from Jeff Castro (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) and staunch defense provided by Zach LaFaver (Hanover, PA/South Western) and company.
The second half saw a similar start for the Shoremen as James Strine scored an unassisted tally just five minutes into the half. An energized Washington team took advantage of the quick start to out-shoot the Gophers 24-6. The Goucher offense looked good at times, getting good runs from their wingers and even defensemen Yaya Diabagate (Hyattsville, MD/International HS at Langley Park) got in the rush, however, the defensive effort from the Shoremen made it difficult to get any quality looks out of the chances. With 4 minutes left in the game and down 3-0 by another Strine strike earlier, the Gophers landed one in the back of the net off of one of the few corners the Gophers took. The cross in by Ali Kazim Nakhid (Beirut, Lebanon/UMBC) found the head of Jeremiah Odubade (Capital Heights, MD/Fairmont Heights) to bring the Gophers to within two. However, the late offensive pressure from the Gophers was to no avail as they fall to 0-3-1 on the season.
The Gophers remain at home on Saturday the 11th, as they play host to Hood College at 7pm at Beldon Field.
