Dever's Late Heroics Move Gophers to ECAC Quarterfinals
TOWSON, Md. - Senior Xavier Dever (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) scored with 14 seconds remaining to lift Goucher College, the second seed in Pod 1, to a 1-0 win over third-seeded Neumann University in the first round of the 2022 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship Saturday afternoon. The Gophers advance to meet top-seeded Alvernia in Sunday's quarterfinal round.
- Jonathan Alvarado (Hyattsville, Md./International HS at Langley Park) put a shot on goal 12 minutes in for Goucher (10-4-5) that was saved by Neumann (7-8-3) keeper Seth Walker.
- Gopher keeper Ale Sternini (Rome, Italy/Williston Northampton) made a save on Eddie Proud just past the midway point of the half.
- Goucher outshot the Knights 5-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
- Isaiah Perry (West Hartford, Conn./Hall) had a shot saved by Walker eight minutes into the second half.
- Just over four minutes later Sternini stopped a bid by Jon Zubert.
- Neumann put another shot on goal that was turned aside by Sternini in the 65th minute.
- Jake Kuzmick hit the post in the 81st minute for Neumann.
- Jeremiah Odubade (London, England/Fairmont Heights) had an attempt saved by Walker with eight minutes left.
- With the clock ticking down, Odubade played a ball into the box on the ground to Dever, who caught Walker flat-footed as he put it to his right and in for the goal and the win.
- Both teams finished with nine shots.
- Sternini recorded three saves en route to his second straight and sixth shutout of the season.
- Walker also recorded three saves.
- Goucher's 10th win gives the Gophers their most wins since recording a program-record 13 wins in 1992. The 10 wins are tied for the second most in program history.
- Odubade and Flynn McNally (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) led Goucher with two shots apiece.
- Goucher is making its first-ever ECAC appearance.
