Gophers Edged by Dickinson for First Loss

TOWSON, Md. - A goal just over 11 minutes into the second half proved to be the difference as regionally-ranked Dickinson College edged Goucher College 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer Tuesday evening at Beldon Field.
- Goucher (5-1-1) got a header on goal by Michael Adekanmbi just over four minutes in.
- Gopher keeper Ale Sternini made his first save of the game 12 minutes in on a shot by Dickinson's (4-1-1) Ethan Jarden.
- With a minute left in the first half, Flynn McNally took advantage of a turnover by a Red Devil player and came in alone on Dickinson keeper Alexander Henrich, but Henrich made the save.
- The two teams were deadlocked 0-0 at halftime.
- Adekanmbi lifted a shot just under a minute in to the second half that kissed off the crossbar.
- Six minutes later Adekanmbi's shot on target was saved by Henrich.
- Dickinson saw a crossbar shot of its own in the 55th minute.
- Two minutes later, Johnny Diederich sent a low ball in from the left that bounced around and was put in by Finn Weber to put the guests up 1-0.
- Drew Gentile sent a shot wide from the top of the box with 33 minutes left.
- Sternini recorded a save in the 73rd minute.
- With nine minutes left, Rafael Berhanu nearly knocked in a cross from the right but Red Devil relief goalie Nick Potter got a hand on it.
- Sternini made his final save of the night with six minutes left.
- Dickinson, ranked No. 7 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Region V ranking, outshot Goucher 14-12.
- Sternini made four saves, while Henrich made three. Potter recorded one save in the final 29:12.
- Dickinson held a 5-3 lead in corner kicks.
- Adekanmbi led the Gophers with three shots.
- Goucher saw an 11-match unbeaten streak (7-0-4) dating back to last season snapped as it suffered its first defeat of the season.
- The two teams were meeting for the first time since 2016.
- The Gophers open Landmark Conference play Saturday, traveling to newcomer Lycoming for a 1 pm contest.
- Goucher returns home next Saturday, September 30, taking on Juniata in a 1 pm Landmark Conference game at Beldon Field.
