TOWSON, Md. — Goucher's chances of earning a spot in the Landmark Conference postseason tournament were dealt a severe blow today when the Gophers suffered a 9-0 loss at home to Catholic.
The Gophers (2-7, 1-4 Landmark), who would have been in a four-way tie for fourth place had they beaten the Cardinals (12-5, 3-2 Landmark), were able to win only seven games during the doubles competition. At No. 1, Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Billie Weiss (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) bowed to Bernardo Nogales and Jean Paul Roman, 8-2.
Nogales was victorious over Baum 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
Catholic's Cassian Utrie earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over David Spivey (Brooklandville, Md./Park School of Baltimore) at No. 2 and Joe Peters defeated Weiss 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
The loss was Goucher's fourth in a row in the series between the two schools. The last time the Gophers managed to top the Cardinals was a 6-3 triumph in the quarterfinals of the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
