Men’s Tennis Sweeps All on Triple Header Saturday
The Goucher men’s tennis team played 3 matches in one day and swept all 3 by 9-0 scores, finishing the fall segment of their dual match season.
TOWSON, Md. - The Goucher College men's tennis team played 3 matches in one day and swept all 3 by 9-0 scores, finishing the fall segment of their dual match season.
In the first match against Stevenson University Goucher swept the doubles 3-0 with Josiah Meekins (Trenton, N.J.) and Elliott Diehl (York, Pa.) at #2 doubles breaking through with an 8-4 win over Stevenson's Alex Kiblin and Drew Ryan. The #3 doubles team of Josh Goldberg (Centreville, Md.) and Britton Shortle (Winter Park, Fl.) came through next with an 8-4 win over Douglas Vaughn and Richie Abruscato, followed by the #1 doubles team of Jack Hodges (London, England) and Frankie Mullinix (Washington, D.C.), who defeated Wornden Ly and Ray McDermott by a 9-7 score.
In singles competition Goucher's #2 singles Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va.) finished his match first with Ly, winning 6-1, 6-0. Mike Herman (Prague, Czech Republic), playing #1 singles, then defeated McDermott 6-1, 6-1. Next off court was #3 singles Mullinix who beat Stevenson's Ryan 6-1, 6-1. At #4 singles Goucher's Meekins won his match with Vaughn, 6-3, 6-2. Playing #6 singles for Goucher Daniel Kim (Arlington, Ma.) won his first ever collegiate match by winning 6-4, 6-0 against Peter Appiah. In the final match with Stevenson, Goldberg took #5 singles over Kiblin by winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, giving the Gophers their 9-0 final tally.
In the second match of the day against Penn State Harrisburg fell 9-0 to the Gophers as Goucher's #1 doubles team of Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fl.) and Herman started things off by beating Paul Banka and Jared Gluck 8-0. Meekins and Dumas followed at #2 doubles with an 8-1 win over Noah Nacionales and Isaac George, and Shortle and Kim wrapped up doubles play by defeating Benjamin Rusling and Austin Stehman 8-2.
In singles against Penn State Harrisburg Dumas won his match at #1 singles against Banka, winning 6-0, 6-0. Diehl followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Nacionales at #3 singles. Goldberg played #4 singles and won his match over George 6-2, 6-0. Mullinex at #2 singles took down Rusling 6-4, 6-0 and #5 singles Shortle beat Stehman 6-4, 6-2. Goucher's Jake Brazeau (Greenville, S.C.) finished the scoring at #6 singles with a 6-2, 7-5 defeat of Alexander Rohn.
In the third and final match of the day Messiah College fell to the Gophers 9-0. Shortle and Brazeau got things started at #3 doubles with an 8-1 victory over Messiah's Bryson Boettger and Keller Martin. Ota and Hodges followed with an 8-3 win at #1 doubles against Connor Graybeal and Tim Dunn and Mullinix and Herman wrapped up doubles action at #2 with a win over Alex Mantsevich and Andrew Bookman 8-4.
In the final singles matches of the day Hodges picked up a win first at #2 singles by defeating Graybeal 6-0, 6-0. Herman, playing #3 singles, took out Mantsevich 6-0, 6-0 right before Ota wrapped up his match at #1 singles with a win over Dunn, 6-1, 6-1. Next off court was Diehl, who won his match at #4 singles against Bookman 6-3, 6-1. Playing #5 singles Goldberg beat Martin 6-2, 6-0 and Meekins finished the action for the day at #6 singles with a win against Boettger 6-1, 6-1.
The Gophers will be back on court February 24th when they take on Bridgewater College at Salisbury University.
