Men’s Tennis Claws Past Regionally-Ranked Ursinus, 7-2
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - A week after knocking off a top-ranked NJCAA opponent, the Goucher College men’s tennis team willed their way past regionally-ranked Ursinus on Saturday on the road, 7-2.
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - A week after knocking off a top-ranked NJCAA opponent, the Goucher College men's tennis team willed their way past regionally-ranked Ursinus on Saturday on the road, 7-2.
With the win, Goucher improved to 11-2 overall on the year, while Ursinus, who is ranked 19th regionally, fell to 6-2 with the defeat.
First, in doubles, Goucher got the day started on a high note with two victories.
At number one, the tandem of first-year Tetsuya Ota (Winter Park, Fla.) and senior Jack Hodges (London, England) rolled to an 8-3 victory, then at number three, sophomore Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va.) and junior Elliot Diehl (York, Pa.) coasted to an 8-2 win to put Goucher up. 2-1, in the match.
In singles, sophomore Frankie Mullinix (Washington, D.C.) put Goucher up 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-1 win at number four. After Ursinus got a point back with a win at number one singles, Goucher then won the remaining singles matches contested on the day.
First, at number five singles, Dumas rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win, which was followed up by a three-set victory by Hodges at number two that clinched the victory for the Gophers (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).
Diehl was also a three-set victor at number six (3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7)), and sophomore Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic) finished the day off with a three-set win of his own at number three (3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)).
The Goucher College men's tennis team now heads to Hilton Head, South Carolina for their Spring Break trip. The Gophers open play on Tuesday, taking on Carleton at 4 p.m.
