For the third consecutive season, a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team has been named the Landmark Conference's Senior Scholar Athlete, as Jack Hodges (London, England) was named the recipient of this years award on Wednesday morning.
Hodges joins Midori Fujitani and Seth Hoesman as Gophers who have earned the Landmark's Senior Scholar Athlete award over the last three seasons. It is also the fourth time in the last five years that a Goucher men's tennis student-athlete earned the award, as David Spivey took the award in 2014.
Also, Hodges joins women's cross country's Soliana Goldrich as student-athletes who earned the Senior Scholar Athlete award from the Landmark at Goucher in their respective sports during the 2017-18 season.
The Senior Scholar Athlete award for Hodges bookends an incredible career for him at Goucher College both on the court and in the classroom.
On the court, Hodges has been the leader of a team that has won three straight Landmark Conference Championships, captured 73 total matches, and won a pair of contests in the NCAA Championship, including a 5-0 victory over Messiah in the First Round of competition this season.
In 2017-18, Hodges played at number one doubles and number two singles for the majority of the year, finishing with a 19-9 record in singles and a 16-11 mark with partner and first-year Tetsuya Ota (Winter Park, Fla.).
Playing in the number two spot on the lineup for most of the year in singles, Hodges posted a 14-6 record there on the year and went a perfect 7-0 in singles action during the conference season. Throughout the year, Hodges broke two Landmark Conference records: most career doubles victories (62) and most singles victories in conference play (26), as well.
For his efforts at both singles and doubles, Hodges named the Landmark Conference's Player of the Year earlier this month, becoming just the second player in program history to earn the honor. He was also named to the All-Landmark Conference First Team in both singles and doubles, as well, marking the third time he nabbed a spot on the All-Landmark Teams in his career.
Off the court, Hodges has recorded a 3.92 GPA at Goucher as a dual French and English major at the College. He has also served as a student instructor in the French department at Goucher, helping both student and professors.
The honorees of the Senior Scholar Athlete awards must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletic representatives, and sports information directors. In all, the Landmark Conference selects 22 senior scholar-athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.
