Ota Wins A Pair Of Matches Including Decisive Match To Power Goucher Men's Tennis To 5-4 Win At Washington (Md.)
CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep) won two matches including the deciding match to propel Goucher College past Washington College (Md.) 5-4 in non-conference men's tennis action on Friday.
Ota and Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nova Porg) won their No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-6 to help the Gophers jump out to a 2-1 lead after doubles. Ota then won his No. 1 singles match by identical scores of 6-1, 6-1 and was the fifth Goucher win on the afternoon to seal a 5-4 victory.
Frankie Mullinix (Washington, D.C./The George School) and Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) took the No. 2 doubles match, 8-5. Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) and Elliot Diehl (York, Pa./York Suburban) lost at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.
Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) was the first singles match to finish with the freshman winning a three-setter 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. Mullinix won the first set 6-1 and was up 3-0 before the match ended in a default with the Gophers earning the win for a 4-1 edge.
The Shoremen won the final three matches of the day. Adebamgbe fell at No. 4 singles 8-2, Herman lost at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-2 and Dumas fell at No. 5 singles, 8-3.
Goucher returns to action when the squad heads to Florida for spring break. The Gophers will battle Grinnell College at USTA National Campus on March 18 at 6:30 p.m.
