Tetsuya Ota Claims Second Landmark Conference Player Of The Week Honor
BALTIMORE, Md. – Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep), a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for week of April 25-31. It is the second time this season he has received the honor and the third time in his career.
Ota went 4-0 in the week against some of the toughest competition in the league from a year ago. In a 9-0 win against Drew on Saturday, Ota and Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nova Porg) defeated a 2017-18 Landmark Conference doubles team at No. 1 doubles, 8-3. The sophomore then dispensed of an all-conference first-team selection from last year at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. It was more of the same on Sunday in a 7-2 win against Scranton. The Gophers No. 1 doubles team defeated members of the first and second-team All-Landmark Conference doubles squad, 8-3 and then he defeated another all-conference first-team honoree at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0 to help Goucher to its eighth-straight match victory and start league play 2-0.
Ota is 7-4 this season as the No. 1 singles player for Goucher and is 25-12 overall as the No. 1 singles player in his two seasons with the Gophers. Ota and Herman have a 4-7 career record at No. 1 doubles while Ota was also 18-14 last season with Jack Hodges at No. 1 doubles. The sophomore was the Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and an all-conference first-team selection in 2018-19 to help the team to its third-straight conference tournament title.
Ota also earned the honor this season for the week of March 4-10 and last year for the week of February 19-25, 2018.
Goucher, who entered the Oracle/ITA Division III Men's Atlantic South Region Rankings at No. 17 as of Thursday, returns to action on Saturday at Elizabethtown. Match time is 1 p.m.
