Kane Nabs Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Athlete Of The Week
BALTIMORE, Md. – Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select), a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week of September 30-October 6. It is the sophomore's first conference honor.
Kane made his way through the B4 Singles all the way to the finals of the ITA Southeast Regional and went 3-1 over the weekend. Kane had a battle in his opening match in the Round of 16, but defeated Alexander Kulvivat of Randolph thanks to a 14-12 tiebreaker in the third set, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (14-12). The sophomore then took care of Nicholas Simeone of Arcadia, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and downed Matthew Fontanese of Ursinus, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (2) to advance to the B4 Singles Final. He then lost 6-1, 6-4 to Noah Sellinger of Muhlenburg.
Kane finished the fall with a 5-3 record in singles and that including a 2-2 mark against Division I competition at the Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational earlier this year. For his career, Kane is 21-9 overall and 16-5 in dual matches.
Kane is the third member of the 2019-20 Gophers men's tennis team to be recognized for the weekly award by the Landmark Conference. Junior Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep) took home the honor for the fifth time in his career earlier in the fall for his outstanding play at the Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational for the week of September 16-22. The junior also earned the weekly honor for the weeks of March 4-10, 2019, March 25-31, 2019, April 8-14, 2019 and February 19-25, 2018. Senior Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) earned the weekly recognition for the weeks of March 5-11, 2018 and March 18-24., 2019.
The Goucher men's tennis team has competed its fall slate and we will announce the spring portion of its season before the New Year hits.
