Goucher Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season With 7-2 Win Against Virginia Wesleyan
SALISBURY, Md. – Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep), Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion), Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) and Frankie Mullinix (Washington, D.C./The George School) each won their singles and a double matches to power Goucher College past Virginia Wesleyan 7-2 in the first dual match of the year in non-conference men's tennis action on Saturday.
The Gophers opened the spring season in the same place and the same opponent as last year, but the four-time defending Landmark Conference champions opened 2020 with a 7-2 win against the Marlins after falling 5-4 last year to the Virginia Beach program.
Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) and Dumas continue to be a dominant tandem after earning All-Landmark Conference second-team honors last year. The duo moved up to No. 2 doubles and turned back its opponent 8-2 for the first team point of the year.
Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nova Porg) stayed at No. 1 doubles, but Mullinix moved up a spot after teaming with Elliot Diehl last year at No. 2 doubles to earn an 8-5 win.
Playing for the first time together, Kane and Ota won 8-5 at No. 3 singles for what would be the the eventual clinching match.
Ota won at No. 1 singles without allowing a game, 6-0, 6-0 while Dumas moved into the No. 3 spot for a 6-2, 6-3 win. Kane played at No. 4 singles to a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win while Mullinix was also taken to three sets at No. 6 singles 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
Herman lost at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-3 and Adebambge fell at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
Goucher will play two matches on Sunday at Salisbury. The Gophers will face Methodist at 10 a.m. and nationally-ranked Salisbury at 2 p.m.
