Ota Knocks Off No. 14 Singles Player In NCAA Division III For Goucher Men's Tennis; Mullinix Win At No. 6 Singles To Clinch Match Against Methodist
SALISBURY, Md. – Frankie Mullinix (Washington, D.C./The George School) clinched a 5-4 win against Methodist University while Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep) knocked off a nationally-ranked singles player against Oracle/ITA Division III Atlantic South Region No. 8 Salisbury University in non-conference men's tennis action on Sunday.
Despite falling to regionally-ranked Seagulls, Ota had the highlight of the day after stunning the No. 14 player in NCAA Division III/No. 2 player in Atlantic South Region Alec Angredi, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The junior has never lost a singles match against one of the perennial top teams in the region. The 2019 Landmark Conference Player of the Year defeated Ian Siew, who played No. 2 singles on Sunday, in the previous two matchups with a 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles last season and a 6-2, 7-6 (6-4) decision in his freshman campaign.
The Gophers took a 2-1 lead after doubles against Methodist thanks to an Ota 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and a Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) win the final two sets of a three-set match at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 10-6 to put Goucher on the brink of clinching the match. After Mullinix's teammates each won the second set 6-4 at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles only to lose in three sets, Mullinix followed the route of Dumas in taking the final two sets of his three-set match, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 10-8 to seal a 5-4 win against the Monarchs.
Mullinix and Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Nova Porg) earned a win at No. 1 doubles 8-2 and Ota and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) won at No. 3 singles 8-5 to start the match against Methodist. Dumas and Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) lost 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Herman fell at No. 2 singles 6-3, 4-6, 10-8, Kane dropped his No. 4 singles match, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 and Adebamgbe also lost in three sets at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.
While Ota earned the one team point against Salisbury, Mullinix took his No. 6 singles match to three sets after winning the first set 7-5 before dropping the final two sets 6-0, 10-5.
Herman lost at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2, Dumas fell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, Kane dropped his No. 4 singles match 7-5, 6-4 and Adebamgbe lost at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3.
Herman and Mullinix lost to the No. 7 nationally-ranked doubles team 8-5 at No. 1 doubles while Adebamgbe and Dumas fell 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and Ota and Kane dropped an 8-2 match at No. 3.
Goucher returns to action at No. 32 College of New Jersey on March 8. Match time is 1 p.m.
