Goucher's Tetsuya Ota Secures Sixth Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Athlete Of The Week Honor
BALTIMORE, Md. – Tetsuya Ota (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Prep), a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the start of the spring season. It is the sixth time the honor has been bestowed to Ota in his career.
Ota went 3-0 in singles play in his first week of competition in the spring, but may have had his biggest win of his collegiate career with a three-set win against the No. 14 ranked player in NCAA Division III. Ota earned a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win against Salisbury's Alec Angradi, who is ranked No. 14 in NCAA Division III and No. 2 in the Atlantic South Region. The 2019 Landmark Conference Player of the Year only allowed three games in his first two matches thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 win against Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday and then a 6-1, 6-2 win against Methodist on Sunday before his win against the Seagulls in his second match of the day. Ota also went 2-1 in doubles with new teammate Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select) . The duo beat Virginia Wesleyan 8-5 on Saturday and then won by the same score against Methodist before falling to Salisbury 8-2.
It is the third time this season a Gopher men's tennis player has earned the recognition after Ota received the award in September and Kane took home the honor for the week of September 30-October 6.
Ota also earned the weekly honor for the weeks of March 4-10, 2019, March 25-31, 2019, April 8-14, 2019, February 19-25, 2018 and September 16-22, 2019. The junior is also the 2018 Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year and a two-time all-conference first-team selection.
Goucher returns to action at No. 32 College of New Jersey on March 8. Match time is 1 p.m.
