Goucher Athletics Announces Josephine E. Fiske Gopher Pride Male Winner
BALTIMORE, Md. – Frankie Mullinix (North Sutton, N.H./The George School) a member of the Goucher College men's tennis team, has been named the Josephine E. Fiske Gopher Pride Male Award winner.
The Josephine E. Fiske Gopher Pride Award was established in 1986 and is presented annually to one male and one female student in good academic standing who play important roles in the success of their teams. Variables to be weighed in determining the recipients of this award include, but are not limited to: sportsmanship, citizenship, positive attitude, leadership and service to young adults or children.
"I think it is really a testament to Frankie's leadership abilities with especially the team culture and the positivity of the team," said head coach Eric Spangler. "I have not worked with many players where their first priority is looking out for their teammates especially in an individual sport and this is valuable to have on your team."
In a shortened season due to COVID-19, Mullinix posted three singles wins and a 7-5 doubles record. He won at No. 6 singles in a three-set thriller 6-7, (5-7), 6-3, 10-8 to clinch the match 5-4 against regionally-ranked Methodist on February 23 for what also turned out to be his final collegiate singles win. Mullinix teamed with Michael Herman (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Novy PORG) in the fall to go 3-1 in doubles at the Loyola Men's Tennis Tournament, a predominantly field of NCAA Division I competitors on September 20-22.
"I'm very honored to receive this award," said Mullinix. "For me, team culture has always been important and integral part of our success as a team over the last few years and despite all of our success the most valuable experiences I've had is forming relationships with my team and coaches."
Mullinix finishes his career 52-32 in double to finish ranked fourth for career doubles wins in program history and notched a 42-31 singles record to end with the nine-most singles wins in program history. A member of three Landmark Conference Championship teams, he won the clinching match in the semifinals against Susquehanna in his sophomore year and the clinching match against Scranton to claim title last season. He also won two NCAA Division III Tournament doubles matches in his career.
Pat Goralski (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) from the Goucher men's basketball team was also nominated for this award.
