Dumas Clinches First Win At Schroedl Tennis Center In 5-4 Men's Tennis Win Against Susquehanna
BALTIMORE, Md. – Slade Dumas (Great Falls, Va./Dominion) helped usher in the Evelyn Dyke Schroedl '62 Tennis Center on a high note for the men's tennis team with a match-clinching win at No. 1 singles to push Goucher College past Susquehanna University 5-4 in Landmark Conference action on Saturday.
The last time Dumas played a match on Goucher's campus was the 2019 Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Championships on May 4, 2019, where he helped the team to its fourth-straight conference title, and he was named the Most Valuable Player. On Saturday, after Susquehanna won No. 4, 5, 6 singles, the match came down to the result at No. 1 singles, and Dumas came through with a 6-4, 6-2 win.
Goucher used a similar formula that was successful in the season opener against Juniata, and that was lean on Dumas along with his teammates of the 2019 championship team Omosesan Adebamgbe (Philadelphia, Pa./Lower Merion) and Brian Kane (Philadelphia, Pa./Friends Select).
Adebamgbe and Dumas won at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, while Kane teamed with Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas) at No. 2 doubles for an 8-2 win.
The Gophers went into singles with a 2-1 lead. Kane earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles while Adebamgbe registered a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to give the team four team points, needing one win to clinch the victory and Dumas came through.
Alex Dominguez (Hearldburg, Calif./Hearldsburg) and Joshua Pluard (Kannapolis, N.C./A.L. Brown) lost 8-0 at No. 3 doubles. Pluard fell 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Dominguez dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match at No. 6 singles.
Dumas moved into a tie for third place on the program's all-time career singles win list with 61. The senior, who is three wins from the tying former teammate Midori Futjani's program record, will move into a second-place tie with former teammate Jack Hodges (62) with his next victory.
The match on Saturday was the first collegiate men's match at Evelyn Dyke Schroedl '62 Tennis Center. Cerpa and Kane notched the first doubles win for the Gophers, and Kane has the distinction of notching the first singles win for the Blue and Gold.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday, April 10 against Elizabethtown. The match time is noon.
