Drew Remains Unbeaten in Landmark, Tops Gophers

TOWSON, Md. - In a hotly-contested rematch of last season's Landmark Conference men's tennis final that saw four of six singles matches go three sets. Drew University prevailed with a 7-2 win over Goucher College at the Schroedl Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
- Drew (9-3, 5-0 Landmark) took a 1-0 lead with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
- Goucher (4-8, 3-1) tied the match 1-1 with an 8-3 win by Tadeo Asprella (La Plata, Argentina / Instituto Jose Manuel Estrada) and Angel Cerpa (El Paso, Texas/Americas).
- Jackson Beam (Knightdale, N.C./Knightdale) and Calis Nguyen (Houston, Texas/School of the Woods) battled before dropping an 8-5 decision at No. 1.
- The Rangers earned straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 6 to take a 4-1 lead.
- Nguyen forced a third set at No.2 before dropping a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 decision.
- Gabe Naftoly (Newburyport, Mass.) also battled to force a deciding set before falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.
- Asprella rallied for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 triumph at No. 4.
- Beam took the first set at No. 3 before falling 5-7, 7-6 (7-5), 10-2.
- Asprella extended his singles winning streak to five matches.
- Cerpa and Asprella won their fourth straight doubles match.
- Drew extended its win streak to six matches and is the lone remaining unbeaten team in Landmark Conference play.
- Goucher heads to Catholic on Wednesday afternoon for a 3:30 Landmark Conference match.
- The Gophers are back home next Saturday for a doubleheader, taking on Susquehanna in conference action at 1 before taking on Stevenson in a non-conference match following the conclusion of the first match.
