Goucher Advances to Second Round of NCAA Tournament
BEVERLY, Mass. - The Goucher College Gophers traveled to a neutral site to face the Rhode Island College Anchormen in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tennis Tournament. The Gophers swept the Anchormen, advancing with a 4-0 win.
Benedikt Rummel and Gabe Naftoly secured the win 6-2 in the No. 1 doubles spot, before Guilherme Moraes and Jackson Beam secured the point a minute later in the No. 3 doubles match with a 6-1 victory. Despite being ahead, the No. 2 doubles went unfinished.
Naftoly and Rummel kicked off singles just how they ended doubles, both winning in straight sets to clinch the first singles points of the contest (6-2, 6-0).
The final point came down to Calis Nguyen who finished off his opponent 6-1, 6-1. After just 54 minutes of singles play, this secured the win for the Gophers.
Despite the matches going unfinished, the remaining singles matches were all up after winning the first set. Tadeo Asprella was beating his opponent 4-3 at the conclusion of the match, Moraes led 4-1, and George King was up 3-2.
The Gophers face Tufts University tomorrow, May 10th in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at 1pm.
