Garry May enters his second season as an assistant coach for the Gopher cross country and track & field programs. May joined the Gophers in the 2017 season and will be responsible for the recruiting efforts for the cross country program. Additionally, Coach May will assist with the coaching of long sprinters, middle distance runners, and vertical/horizontal jumpers for the track & field program.

Coach May’s inaugural season with the Gopher track & field program proved to be a successful one. Under May’s direction, pole vaulter Gabby Blazek finished 3rd place at the Landmark Conference Indoor Championship meet. During the Landmark Outdoor Championship meet in the spring, sprinter Anna Gallina finished runner-up in the 100m dash earning second-team All-Landmark Conference honors. Additionally, the women’s 4x100m relay team of Kennedy Lowery, Natalie Kent, Blazek, and Gallina finished 3rd place overall.

Coach May comes to Goucher after spending eight years at Towson University as an assistant cross country / track & field coach. At Towson, May’s primary responsibility was to lead the women distance runners. In addition, May assisted the head coach in all aspects of the program.

At Towson, May’s student-athletes excelled athletically and academically. May coached eight All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) performers in his time at Towson for cross country and track & field. In addition, one of May’s student-athletes qualified for the 2016 NCAA Division I First Round Track & Field Championships in the 10,000 meters. In 2017, the Towson women’s track & field program won the CAA Outdoor Championship for the first time in school history.

Academically, May’s teams at Towson were recognized by the USTFCCCA organization for the overall team’s grade point average in all his eight years. Two of May’s student-athletes were rewarded high academic honors at Towson. Brandi Gervais was named the 2010-2011 CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Megan Knoblock was awarded the 2017 NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship.

Collegiately, May ran cross country and track & field at Indiana State University before transferring to Ball State University where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Administration in 2008. May is presently continuing his education and will graduate in 2020 with his Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis of Athletic Leadership and Administration from Goucher College.

May is a USATF Level I certified track & field coach and also a 2013 graduate of the USTFCCCA Track & Field Academy obtaining his jumping event specialist certification.

May is married to Towson University head women’s gymnastics coach Vicki May.
