SALISBURY, MD — Goucher bettered its finish by one
spot over last year, finishing in fourth place today at the 2006
Capital Athletic Conference Championships.
The top two performers for the Gophers were freshmen Sean
Mack (Albany, NY/Albany) and Zach Martin (Victor,
NY/Victor Central). Mack completed the 8,000-meter race in
27:04, good for 17th place overall and Martin was three spots
behind in 20th place as he crossed the finish line in 27:12.
While Mack's time is the 27th all-time fastest for a race of that
distance in the history of Goucher's men's cross country program,
the top 26 times are held by just two individuals, making him the
third-fastest individual in program history. Martin's time ranks
32nd on the program's all-time list.
The next three Goucher runners to complete the race were
Matt Spitznagel (Parkton, MD/Friends School of
Baltimore) in 22nd place (27:16), Wells Holbrook
(Knoxville, TN/Knox West) in 31st (27:46) and Matt
Tilghman (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) in 35th
(28:07).
The individual champion was Justin Kirk from Mary Washington. His
winning time was 25:32.
Only five points separated first place from second place in the
team scoring with Salisbury capturing the team title with 30
points. Mary Washington placed second with 35 points, York (102
points) was third, Goucher (111) fourth, Catholic (129) fifth, Hood
(142) sixth and Marymount (208) seventh.
