Browne, Geller Finish 5,000 Meter Race in Under 20 Minutes
WESTMINSTER, Md. — Competing without the event's defending individual champion, Goucher finished in fifth place today at the Baltimore Metro Meet.
Joey Negreann (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) crossed the finish line ahead of the other 58 runners in last year's event as a junior, but he did not line up at the starting gate today due to undisclosed reasons.
The first two Goucher runners to complete today's 5,000-meter race were sophomores Troy Browne (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers), who turned in a time of 19:09.67, and Hugh Geller (Devens, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School), who was clocked at 19:45.07.
Senior Andrew Gethins (Yorktown, N.Y./Lakeland) and freshman Zachary Byrum (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) were separated by just one runner as they came in. Gethins posted a time of 20:08.79, good for 49th place, and Byrum followed in the 51st position (20:17.28).
The fifth runner for the Gophers was freshman Mark Egan (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) in 59th place (20:55.25).
With a team score of 132 points, Goucher finished behind Johns Hopkins (15 points), Hood (66), McDaniel (89) and Coppin St. (118). Three points behind the Gophers in sixth place was Stevenson.
