Negreann Again Takes On Navy, Comes Out on Top
TOWSON, Md. — For the second year in a row, the Goucher Cross Country Classic turned out to be Joey Negreann (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) of the Gophers in first place followed by the Fleet.
Senior Defends Individual Title, Completes 8K Race in 26:57.4
TOWSON, Md. — For the second year in a row, the Goucher Cross Country Classic turned out to be Joey Negreann (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) of the Gophers in first place followed by the Fleet.
Negreann successfully defended his title at this event today by completing the 8,000-meter race over the rural terrain of Goucher's campus in 26:57.4, which allowed the senior to cross the finish line ahead of all the remaining 71 runners.
The next 12 runners to come in all represented the U.S. Naval Academy. Runner-up to Negreann was John Sweeney, who posted a time of 27:01.3. Zachery Hebda was third (27:02.2), Ryan Kelley fourth (27:08.1) and Drew Calcagno fifth (27:15.4).
A year ago when Negreann won the race with his time of 27:09.2, he was followed by seven consecutive runners from Navy.
The next runners from Goucher to finish today after Negreann were Nick Manta (North Wales, Pa./Abington Friends School) in 23rd place and Troy Browne (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) in 27th. Manta was clocked at 30:17.5 and Browne at 30:33.5
Navy easily won the team title with a score of 20 points. Truett-McConnell, which made its first appearance in the event, placed second with a score of 81 points and head coach John Caslin's runners took third with 95 points. The rest of the team scores: 4.
