Senior Will Represent Goucher at NCAA Div. III Championship
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. — By placing 12th in a field of 328 runners at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional Championship today, Joey Negreann (Denver, Colo./Cherry Creek) earned All-Mideast Region honors and qualified to represent Goucher in the NCAA Division III Championship on Nov. 19.
Negreann will be only the second individual in the history of the school's men's cross country program to compete in the national meet, joining Jeff Olenick, who went to nationals as a freshman in 1997 and again as a senior in 2000.
Coming off a seventh-place finish at the 2011 Landmark Conference Cross Country Championship, the senior completed today's 8,000-meter race in 25:58, which is the eighth-fastest time for that distance in program history.
The individual champion was Allegheny's Bobby Over, who was clocked at 25:25 and held off Eric Arnold of Haverford in a tight sprint into the chute. Susquehanna's Ian Quinlan was third (25:29) and the only other Landmark Conference runner to cross the finish line ahead of Negreann was Chris Wasnetsky from Scranton in fifth (25:35).
Goucher didn't have another runner come in after Negreann until Troy Browne (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) completed his race in 29:21, good for 192nd place. Hugh Geller (Devens, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School), Nick Manta (North Wales, Pa./Abington Friends School) and Zachary Byrum (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point) followed: Geller was 229th overall (29:58), Manta was 258th (30:47) and Byrum was 280th (31:20).
With a team score of 936, the Gophers placed 32nd among the 47 teams which had a sufficient number of runners to be awarded a team score.
