Freshmen Follows 11 Navy Runners Across Finish Line

TOWSON, Md. — Goucher wasn't able to sneak any of its runners in ahead of the the 11 from the U.S. Naval Academy, so the Gophers had to settle for second place today at the Goucher Cross Country Classic.
The first Navy runner to cross the finish line in the 8,000-meter race was Shay Martin in 28:20.1. Once the academy's 11th runner came in, it was still over a minute before the Gophers took over as they produced the next five finishers, starting with freshman Anthony Lee (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River) in 12th place with his time of 29:41.9.
Following Lee came seniors Hugh Geller (Devens, Mass./Francis W. Parker Charter Essential School), Matt Forgues (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) and Troy Browne (Springdale, Md./C.H. Flowers) in 12th through 14th place, respectively. Geller completed the race in 30:05.1; Forgues was clocked at 31:21.8 and Browne at 31:25.4.
The fifth runner to determine Goucher's team score of 50 points was junior Zachary Byrum (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point), who posted a time of 31:50.2, good for 16th place.
Navy was awarded a perfect team score of 15 points.
