Goucher Graduate Matthew Forgues Places 12th In 50K Race Walk At Pan American 50K Race Walk Cup
BALTIMORE, Md. – Matthew Forgues, a 2014 graduate of Goucher College and former runner for the Gophers cross country team, finished 12th in the Men's 50k Race Walk as a member of the United States team at the Pan American 50K Race Walk Cup in Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico on April 20-21.
Forgues, who is now training for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan, was the top American to finish in the event with a time of 4:15.22 and was one of only three athletes from the United States to compete in the event. A Chula Vista, California, native, he qualified for the 2019 Pan American Race Walk Cup at the 2019 United States Track And Field 50K Race Walk Championships in Santee, California, on January 26 after winning the event.
He has notched a higher finish each year at the United States Track And Field 50K Race Walk Championships since 2015 when he finished fifth before placing fourth in 2016, third in 2017 and second in 2018. In September 2018, Forgues won the 40K National Championships.
Forgues, who came to Baltimore from Boothbay, Maine, was a member of the Goucher cross country team for his senior campaign of 2013. He studied abroad while at Goucher in Santiago, Chile where he competed in the Santiago Marathon. After graduation, he went to teach on an Indian reservation, Standing Rock, in North and South Dakota. There, he rekindled his love of racewalking.
