Brown, Roach Named March's Gophers of the Month
TOWSON, Md. — Women’s lacrosse midfielder Hannah Mae Brown and men’s lacrosse attackman Max Roach, who each had career-best performances in recent weeks, have been selected as the Gophers of the Month for March.
TOWSON, Md. — Women’s lacrosse midfielder Hannah Mae Brown (Pinedale, Wyo./Dunn School) and men’s lacrosse attackman Max Roach (Austin, Texas/Austin), who each had career-best performances in recent weeks, have been selected as the Gophers of the Month for March.
Brown is the only Gopher to have scored in all 11 games this season, and she set new single-game career-highs in goals, assists, draw controls and ground balls this past month. In an 18-6 win over Berry on March 5, Brown registered 11 draw controls, which were the most for Goucher in nearly nine years, to go along with three goals and an assist.
Five days later, she delivered four assists in a 17-1 win over Medaille. Brown matched that total in a memorable performance at Southwestern (Texas) on March 19, as the senior finished with six goals, four assists and 10 ground balls in Goucher’s 16-4 victory. She became the first Gopher to tally 10 points in a contest since Becca Smith totaled four goals and six assists against West Virginia Wesleyan in April, 2011. For the month of March, Brown had 23 goals, 15 assists and 47 draw controls, and she currently ranks fourth in the Landmark Conference with 41 points for the season.
“Hannah has improved a tremendous amount since our first practice in the fall, and she has proven to be a huge asset to our team both on and off the field,” head coach Ceri Miller said. “We have made it one of our goals to change the culture of the team in order to build a foundation for years to come, and Hannah has stepped up and played a huge role in that process.”
Roach recorded points in eight of Goucher’s nine games in March, including a noticeable surge in the last four games, three of which were Gopher victories. That stretch began in a 13-8 win over Messiah on March 12. Roach tallied three goals and a career-best three assists in the victory.
He followed that performance with a pair of goals at Merchant Marine, and he then had a three-goal, one-assist, four-ground ball effort in a win over Washington & Jefferson. Roach concluded the month by firing in a career-best five goals in Goucher’s 11-3 triumph over Drew, moving the Gophers to 2-1 in the conference and within a game of .500 at 4-5 for the season. For the month, the senior managed 13 goals, six assists and 15 ground balls.
“After a slow start for the team, Max responded by putting in a lot of extra work on his own time, both on the field and in the weight room,” head coach Brian Kelly remarked. “Additionally, he was involved in helping to organize and execute our recent successful campus event, Food Truck Friday. His desire and willingness to be the best he can be both inside and outside athletics helped him earn this personal accolade and helped our team to four wins in March.”
The selections of Brown and Roach as March’s Gophers of the Month were made by the school’s sports information staff. Women’s tennis player Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Tech), men’s tennis player Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan/International School Bangkok) and equestrian rider Joey Fink (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) were also considered for this month’s award.
