TOWSON, Md. — A junior on the equestrian team who was the top overall rider at the 2013 Tournament of Champions Preseason Classic and a junior on the women's cross country team who was the fastest Division III runner in two of the season's first three races have been selected Goucher's Male and Female Gophers of the Month for September.
Joey Fink (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) earned the honor on the men's side for his performance at the first event in this year's Tournament of Champions series. He was Goucher's representative in a competition that started with 22 of the top intercollegiate riders in the nation and ended with him being awarded the prestigious Collegiate Medal, something no other rider in the history of the school's equestrian program has won.
Fink also competed in the open division at the Tournament of Champions Preseason Classic, placing second overall in the flat phase and third in the jumping phase.
Katherine Currier (Brooklyn, N.Y./LaGuardia) was chosen Gopher Female Athlete of the Month. Her season started with a third-place finish behind two Division I competitors at the Baltimore Metro Meet where she completed the 5,000-meter race in 19:52.94. Two weeks later she was the first to cross the finish line at the Coach Achtzehn Classic and was clocked at 23:56.56, which is the 23rd-fastest time for 6,000 meters all-time by a Goucher female.
The selections of Fink and Currier as September's Gophers
of the Month, announced today, were made by the school's sports
information staff, in consultation with coaches and other athletic
administrators. Also considered on the men's side were junior
forward Nate
Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock
North) from the men's soccer team
and freshman Anthony
Lee (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia
River) from the men's cross country
team. Currier beat out Justine Ruhlin (Cornish,
Maine/Sacopee Valley), a junior
forward on the field hockey team, and Amanda Bercovici (Hackensack,
N.J./Bergen Tech), a junior on the
women's tennis team.
