Hoesman, Perry Named March Gophers of the Month
TOWSON, Md. — Men’s tennis player Seth Hoesman, who went 16-1 across singles and doubles last month for the first place Gophers, and women’s lacrosse midfielder Stefi Perry, who led Goucher in goals, ground balls and caused turnovers, have been selected as the March Gophers of the Month.
TOWSON, Md. — Men’s tennis player Seth Hoesman (Ellicott City, Md./Howard), who went 16-1 across singles and doubles last month for the first place Gophers, and women’s lacrosse midfielder Stefi Perry (Houston, Texas/Klein), who led Goucher in goals, ground balls and caused turnovers, have been selected as the March Gophers of the Month.
Goucher men’s tennis went 6-2 last month, including victories in all three of its Landmark matchups, and Hoesman played a key role in that success. Moving across the top three singles positions, he went 7-1, taking six of those matches in straight sets. The seventh victory was a super tiebreaker triumph over Jacobo Atri from Division II Philadelphia. Hoesman and Joey Caracappa (Wesley Chapel, Fla./Saddlebrook Preparatory School) were also a perfect 8-0 from the No. 1 doubles spot. The junior co-captain, who received his second Landmark Athlete of the Week award on March 30, is 12-3 in singles and 13-3 in doubles during 2014-15.
“Seth has continued to get better in each of the last three years,” head coach Brendan Kincaid said. “He helped lay the foundation for the program we have started to develop, and he’s a big part of why we’ve managed to have the success we’ve had early on in the season. Not only does he display work ethic on the court, but he also brings that same energy to the classroom where he has been able to maintain a GPA over 3.90.”
Perry registered 20 goals, 22 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers for the Gophers, who won five of their eight games in March. She scored in every contest, including a stretch where she netted 13 goals over three straight games against St. Mary’s (Md.), Mount St. Mary (N.Y.) and Meredith from March 11-18. For the season, Perry ranks first in the Landmark in both ground balls (36) and caused turnovers (24) and she is fourth in goals (26).
“After Megan Meluskey (Wilmington, Del./Concord) was injured at the end of February, we asked Stefi to step into a midfield role,” head coach Ceri Miller said. “She has not only met but exceeded our expectations so far. She has turned into a team leader on both ends of the field. We can count on Stefi to communicate and help facilitate both the offensive and defensive game plans. She has 100 percent earned this award.”
The selections of Hoesman and Perry were made by the school’s sports information staff. Men’s lacrosse defender Andrew Foster (Ashland, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy), equestrian rider Laura Malone (Weston, Mass./Weston) and equestrian rider Joey Fink (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) were also considered for this month’s honor.
