Swimming Standouts Earn GOTM Honor for November
TOWSON, Md. — Men’s swimmer Colin Richter, who won all eight individual races he competed in while contributing to three new pool records, and women’s swimmer Alexis Regopoulos, who won 10 races and posted the fastest Landmark time this season in the 1,000-yard freestyle, have been selected as the November Gophers of the Month.
TOWSON, Md. — Men’s swimmer Colin Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), who won all eight individual races he competed in while contributing to three new pool records, and women’s swimmer Alexis Regopoulos (Fitchburg, Mass./North Middlesex Regional), who won 10 races and posted the fastest Landmark time this season in the 1,000-yard freestyle, have been selected as the November Gophers of the Month.
The men’s swim program is off to a 6-2 start in its dual meet season, already clinching its most wins since the 1993-94 squad went 9-3, and Richter has played a key role in that success. The junior broke a 14-year old pool record in the 100 backstroke during Goucher’s first ever win over Scranton on Nov. 8, and he also was a part of a 200 medley relay foursome which set a new pool mark that afternoon.
During the following meet against Gallaudet on Nov. 15, Richter teamed with his brother Morgan Richter (Cleburne, Texas/Cleburne), Brian Cha (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge) and Sam Davis (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) to set a new von Borries pool standard in the 400 free relay. Colin currently holds the second fastest Landmark time this season in the 100 back, while his top times in the 200 back and the 200 individual medley rank third in the conference thus far.
“We’ve definitely seen a lot of consistency from Colin this season,” head coach Thomas Till said. “He’s been swimming strong from week-to-week, and with the effort that he puts into his training, we expect that to continue right up through the conference championships.”
Goucher’s women’s swim team is off to a similarly strong start. The Gophers are up to five meet victories this season, their most since 2009-10, after three wins during the month of November. Regopoulos won all three of her individual races on Nov. 8 to lead Goucher to a victory over Juniata which was the program’s first Landmark triumph since that 2009-10 campaign.
The week prior, Regopoulos completed the 1,000 free in 11:09.02 during a tri-meet against St. Mary’s (Md.) and Marymount. That is the seventh-fastest time in the history of the conference at that distance, and no other Landmark swimmer has come within 13 seconds of that time this season. Regopoulos also holds the third-fastest conference time in the 500 free.
“We anticipated a lot of big things from Alexis, and she hasn’t let us down one bit,” Till remarked. “She’s already close to some of our program records in the distance events, and I think she will continue to get stronger as the season goes on.”
Both Richter and Regopoulos received Athlete of the Week accolades from the Landmark for their November performances. The swim teams resume their season at the Yellow Jacket Invitational this Friday and Saturday.
The selections of Richter and Regopoulos were made by the school’s sports information staff. Women’s basketball forward Olivia Nono (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) and men’s soccer defender Brandon Weiner (Derwood, Md./Col. Zadok A. Magruder) were also considered for this month’s award.
