TOWSON, Md. — Men’s soccer midfielder Luis Gomes (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North), who scored a pair of clutch goals to aid Goucher in its Landmark playoff run, and equestrian rider Cary Hundley (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), who continued an undefeated start to her collegiate career with a pair of blue ribbon performances, have been chosen as the October Gophers of the Month.
Gomes made the most of his two strikes in October. The first goal came with under 13 minutes to go in Goucher’s road contest at Scranton on Oct. 11, doubling the Gophers’ advantage to 2-0 and sealing the program’s first road win over the Royals. The second marker occurred during Goucher’s frantic second-half rally at Juniata on Oct. 25. After initially trailing 3-1, the Gophers had already cut the deficit down to one goal when Gomes directed a long-distance header into the right corner with eight minutes remaining to tie up the score. Goucher would take the lead for good on an own goal 58 seconds later, picking up three crucial points on its way to clinching the fourth spot in the Landmark playoffs.
“Luis had a great month for us on both sides of the ball,” head coach Bryan Laut said. “He has really stepped up his game this year, and his knack for the big moments is a huge reason why we are getting prepared for our first ever Landmark Conference playoff game.”
Hundley appeared in each of the equestrian program’s two shows in October, and she topped her class in both of those appearances. Her first blue ribbon came in intermediate flat at the Mount St. Mary’s IHSA Show on Oct. 4. Hundley then moved up to the open fences level the following weekend at the Goucher IHSA Show, and she once again earned a first place showing. Those results helped the Gophers take first place as a team at both shows, and Goucher has opened up a 31 point lead over its nearest competitors in Zone IV, Region I.
“Cary is a remarkable freshman student and rider,” head coach Jen Bunty commented. “I recruited her hard, and had to fight tooth-and-nail to get her. She came with great skills, works incredibly hard in her classes and improves every day. I am looking forward to three more successful years with her.”
The selections of Gomes and Hundley were made by the school’s sports information staff. Field hockey defender Emily Jewell (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch), equestrian rider Joey Fink (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) and men’s soccer forward Nate Margolis (Ivyland, Pa./Council Rock North) were also considered for this month’s award.
