Blazek Vaults to Second-Team in Track & Field Landmark Conference Championships
Selinsgrove, Pa. – Gabby Blazek (New Orleans, La. / Louise S McGehee) and other Gophers highlighted the Goucher Track and Field team as they wrapped up the indoor season at the Landmark Championships on Saturday.
Blazek finished second in the pole vault by reaching 3.19m in her jumps. This was better than her second-place finish in the pole vault during the 2019 Landmark Indoor Track & Field Championships. Last year she jumped to 3.04m. Blazek also made Second Team All-Landmark for the second year in a row.
In addition to Blazek's success, Mia Taylor (Bowie, Md. / Wakefield) placed fourth in the 60m hurdles. Her time was 9.68 seconds for the race. Teammate, Zoe Mitchener (Lynnfield, Mass. / New England Academy), followed with a time of 12.84 seconds and 15th place.
Anna Gallina (Whitehall, Pa. / Whitehall) and Neli La Court Ruiz (York, Pa. / Northeastern) both placed in the 60m dash. La Court Ruiz finished 11th with a time of 8.51 seconds. Gallina ran in 8.19 seconds and gained fifth place for the race. She also participated in the 200m dash where she ran in 28.32 seconds and garnered 13th.
Sydney Smith (Falls Church, Va. / George Mason HS) won top-ten finishes in the long jump and triple jump events. In the long jump, Smith reached 4.78m and tenth place. Her best finish was in the triple jump where reaching 10.10m earned her fifth place.
To round out the women's side, the 4x200m relay team placed sixth and had a time of 2:07.15.
On the men's side, Darby Bauer (Perkiomenville, Pa. / Boyertown Area) and Brandon Julot (Baltimore, Md. / The SEED School) competed in the shot put and weight throw for the Gophers. Bauer was 12th in the shot put and 11th in the weight throw with distances of 10.98m and 12.08m, respectively. His weight throw was 0.28m farther than his try at the 2019 Landmark Conference Championships. Julot shot 10.29m in the shot put and placed 15th. In the weight throw, he reached 10.43m and 16th place.
Now that the Gophers have finished the indoor season, they will move on to the outdoor season. It starts with the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at the Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The meet will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2020.
