Thornton-Fillyaw Runs Third-Fastest 600 in DIII History to Open Season
A total of seven school records fell in the season opener at the TCNJ Winter Open
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Goucher College sophomore Tanise Thornton-Fillyaw ran the third-fastest women's 600-meter run in the history of Division III as the Gopher indoor track and field teams opened the season with a strong showing at the TCNJ Winter Open at the 168th Street Armory on Saturday evening.
A total of seven school records, three for the women and four for the men, fell on Saturday.
Thornton-Fillyaw won the 600 with a time of 1:33.87, bettering her own program record set last season. Her time trails just the 1:30.01 set by multi-time national champion Esther Seeland of Messiah in 2022 and a 1:31.68 run by Macalester's Phoebe Aguilar in 2019.
Thornton-Fillyaw also set a program record in the indoor mile, placing fifth with a time of 5:19.27. The previous record of 5:30.44 was set by Katherine Currier in 2011.
Sophomore Precious Enow set a school and Landmark Conference record in the women's 300 with a time of 42.32 seconds to finish sixth overall. She bettered the program record of 43.58 set by Tahira Bakare last season, and the conference record of 42.87 seconds established by Jamie Eggleton of Susquehanna in 2009.
Enow narrowly missed qualifying for the 60-meter dash final with a time of 8.10 seconds to come in 10th in the prelims. She also finished second in the 400 with a time of 1:01.24.
Dorian Cheney took home eighth in the women's high jump with a leap of 1.47 meters. She also finished 15th out of 34 in the long jump with a leap of 4.94 meters.
Ray Asiedu placed 14th in the women's 60-meter prelims with a time of 8.20 seconds.
First year Pani Marousis set a program record in the men's 600, posting a time of 1:25.86 to come in 10th. He broke the time of 1:29.15 set by Brian Gautier in 2010.
Senior Sean Whitfield set the men's 1000-meter school record with a time of 2:43.14 to come in seventh. He broke the old record of 2:50.04 set by Adam Scipione in 2007.
First year Aidan Kress posted a school-record mark of 12.63 meters in the triple jump. He edged the old mark of 12.62 meters established by Devon Esslinger in 2019. Kress placed 12th overall.
The men's 4x400 relay squad placed third and ran a school-record time of 3:32.10. The relay, consisting of Briston, Marousis, Whitfield and AJ Landy, bettered the old mark of 3:36.04 set in 2012.
First year Jay Briston finished 12th out of 44 entries in the 60-meter dash prelims, posting a time of 7.14 seconds. Classmate Emmanuel Olarewju finished seventh in the 400, recording a time of 52.97 seconds.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday, January 12 at the Lebanon Valley Invitational.
