TOWSON, Md. - A subplot to this evening's game between Goucher and Drew in the Sports & Recreation Center was that it featured the two leading scorers in the Landmark Conference.
Goucher's Shadae Swan (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) held the upper hand in her showdown with Allison Hartnett of the Rangers. Swan, who was averaging 23.3 points per game going in, poured in 27 points, while Hartnett was held to 10 points, nearly seven points below her average.
The Gophers (7-6, 2-1 Landmark) also prevailed where it counted the most - on the scoreboard. They outscored the Rangers, 23-15, over the final 9:56 to record a 64-56 victory.
As a result of their win, the Gophers moved into a four-way tie with Drew, Moravian and Scranton for first place in the Landmark Conference.
The turning point of tonight's contest occurred with the score tied at 41-41 midway through the second half when a technical foul was assessed to Drew's bench. The Gophers never trailed after Swan canned both of the free throws that resulted from the technical.
Goucher spent a lot of time at the charity stripe in the second half, knocking down 19 of their 26 attempts (.731). By comparison, they were 8-for-27 from the field (.296) over the final 20 minutes.
With her 27-point performance, Swan extended her streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points to 60. She was also credited with five rebounds, two assists and six steals.
Amber Smith (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) supplied the Gophers with 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Candra Scott (Bowie, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added nine points.
