The Goucher College women's basketball program will be hosting the fourth annual Renie Amoss Tip-Off Classic on November 15-16, 2024.
The Renie Amoss Memorial Tip-Off Classic replaces the annual Renie Amoss Memorial Road Race/Walk that has been held in honor of Corene "Renie" Amoss '93 for 27 years. This year's tournament features Goucher, Bryn Mawr, Eastern Mennonite, Lancaster Bible, Lehman and Trinity Washington.
Corene “Renie” Amoss graduated from Goucher College in May 1993 following an exceptional collegiate career. She earned a 3.7 GPA as an honors student in economics and management. Renie was a stellar athlete who earned All-America status as a four-year starter in field hockey and basketball, and by her senior year was the tennis team’s number two player. She scored 2,220 points in her basketball career and her sports accomplishments can be seen on plaques in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. Scoreboards in the SRC gymnasium and on the Fiske field hockey field were dedicated in her honor. Renie’s number 11 basketball and field hockey jerseys were retired.
The true measure of Renie, the person, can be found in the strength of her everlasting impact in the hearts and minds of the people who knew her. She was truly special. Her personality and charisma defined who she was. She had an infectious laugh and an enthusiasm for even the most mundane of events, which to her offered the opportunity for many a story. Her competitive fire burned bright, and in games and practices she constantly pushed her teammates to higher levels. She valued academics and athletics equally, and showed how it was possible to balance and excel at both things. Most of all, she valued the people in her life, her family, her friends; and she made it clear through her actions that every day was just another adventure to be lived to its fullest extent.
Renie died in a car accident two weeks after her Goucher graduation. Those who knew her felt then, and continue to feel, a great sense of loss though the ensuing years have helped to change the focus to a happy remembrance of all of Renie’s wonderful qualities.
For 27 years, the “Renie Amoss Memorial Run/Walk” was held in October on the Goucher campus. Proceeds benefited the Corene Amoss Memorial Trust which has granted 79 awards to Goucher students. The awards were presented after the annual Race which had become a tradition during the Family Weekend and the athletic homecoming. The COVID-19 pandemic made it impossible to run the 2020 race on campus.
2021 marked the end of the Renie Race leaving us many great memories, but the beginning of the Renie Amoss Memorial Tip-Off Classic. The 2024 award recipients will be honored after Goucher's game on Saturday, November 16
