BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Shadae Swan (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) surpassed 20 points in a game for the 12th time this season, but it wasn't enough to help Goucher earn a Landmark Conference victory on the road this afternoon. Instead, the Gophers lost to Moravian, 70-59.
The Greyhounds (11-5, 4-1 Landmark) needed less than four minutes to establish a double-digit lead over the Gophers as a three-point basket by Megan Kocon just 3:50 into the contest put Moravian ahead 12-2. Even though Swan produced 13 points in the opening 20:00, the Gophers trailed at halftime, 43-27.
Goucher (7-8, 2-3 Landmark) fell behind by as many as 25 points in the second half before limiting the Greyounds to one point over a span of 6:20. When Swan connected from three-point range with 7:26 left to play, the Gophers had knocked their deficit down to 60-45.
It wasn't until a conventional three-point play by Kathleen O'Grady (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra) with just 1:16 remaining that Moravian's lead slipped into single digits at 66-57, but four free throws by Jessica Foran in the final :49 prevented the Gophers from getting any closer.
Swan led all scorers with her 23-point performance, enough for her to pass Betsy Weingarten (1985-88) and become the fourth-leading all-time scorer in the history of Goucher's women's basketball program with 1,453 career points.
Amber Smith (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) supplied the Gophers with 13 points and team-high totals of six rebounds and four steals.
Foran captured scoring honors for Moravian by finishing with 19 points.
