TOWSON, Md. - Goucher's Amber Smith (Baltimore, MD/Institute of Notre Dame) was the game's leading scorer and rebounder as she finished with a career-high 20 points and grabbed 12 boards, but the Gophers still fell to Moravian, 72-62, in Landmark Conference action this evening.
For only the second time all season, somebody other than Shadae Swan (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy) was the leading scorer for the Gophers (7-15, 2-10 Landmark). Still, after being held to just four points in the first half, the senior guard/forward wound up with 19 points, more than enough for her to become the second-leading all-time scorer in the history of Goucher's women's basketball program.
Swan's new career total of 1,590 points moves her past Kate Guggino, who tallied 1,572 points during her four seasons with the Gophers (2001-04). Goucher's all-time scoring leader is Renie Amoss (1990-93) with 2,220 points.
Against the Greyhounds (15-8, 8-4 Landmark), head coach Didi Cotton's Gophers trailed 36-24 at halftime and fell behind by as many as 17 points in the second half before closing to within 61-52 on a lay-up by Leia Roberts-Brown (Washington, DC/Archbishop Carroll) with 4:30 left to play. The rest of the way, however, Moravian went 3-for-3 from the field and 5-of-7 at the free-throw line.
The Greyhounds shot 55.6 percent from the field in the first half and cooled off only slightly in the second period to finish the game with a .500 shooting percentage. Alyssa Bisci captured scoring honors for the Greyhounds with 17 points.
