AUSTIN, Texas — Nine different players got into the scoring act for Goucher in the first half of this evening's game against Concordia (Texas) at the CTX Winter Classic. Yet, because not one of them managed to tally more than three points, head coach Didi Cotton's squad was stuck on 20 points and trailed by 21 after 20 minutes.
The Gophers were able to carve their deficit below double digits during the second half, but they were never able to catch the Tornados and wound up suffering a 63-50 setback.
Amy Smith (Logan Twp., N.J./Paulsboro) and Precious Kollock (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) were the top two scorers for Goucher in the first half, both with only three points. Smith nailed a shot from 3-point range on the Gophers' second possession of the contest, tying the score at 3-3; Kollock connected on a 3-point try with 4:57 remaining before halftime, reducing Concordia's lead to 36-16.
The Gophers (0-8) strung together eight unanswered points to open the second half, keeping the Tornados (3-4) off the scoreboard until Shamika Singleton got a short-range jumper to drop 5:57 into the period. Just seven points separated the two teams when Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie) canned a pair of free throws to make the score 49-42 with 7:02 left to play, but Concordia outscored Goucher, 13-2, over the next 4:59 to build its cushion back up to 18 points.
Singleton led all scorers as she furnished the Tornados with 24 points.
Huff, who supplied the Gophers with 10 points in the second half, wound up sharing scoring honors for Goucher with Kollock as both players produced 12 points.
Although they shot just 20-for-67 from the field (.299), the Gophers committed a season-low 15 turnovers this evening.
