Royals Roll Past Gophers in Season Finale

SCRANTON, Pa. — The 2013-14 women's basketball season came to a close this afternoon, with Goucher dropping a 92-48 decision to conference-leading Scranton, which entered the game receiving votes in both the D3hoops.com and USA Today Coaches national polls.

The Royals (22-3, 13-1 Landmark) put this one out of reach early, scoring the game's first 18 points before an India Perkins (Brentwood, Md./Bladensburg) layup got Goucher (6-18, 2-12) on the board midway through the first half.

By halftime, the margin had increased to 45-17. The Gophers were more competitive after the break, but were still outscored by 16 points in the final 20 minutes. Scranton led by as many as 49 in the closing minutes.

Sharnell Huff (Bowie, Md./Bowie), in the final game of her collegiate career, led Goucher with 21 points and seven rebounds. She scored 20 points or more in eight games this season, including six Landmark contests, and finishes with 1,130 points at Goucher. That total is tied with Kim Rogers for the seventh-most in Gopher history. Huff hit 8 of 20 shots from the field, including three more from long distance. She finishes with 66 made 3-pointers, which is 11 more than any other Goucher player had made in a season.

Precious Kollock (Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) added eight points and a pair of assists in her last game for the Gophers. Shaquilla Ferguson (Herndon, Va./Herndon) dished out a team-high three assists.

The Royals made 56.2 percent of their shots from the field, including 11 of 20 from 3-point range. Four players scored in double figures, with Meredith Mesaris leading the way with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Scranton, Catholic, Moravian and Juniata qualified for the Landmark postseason tournament, with the semifinals taking place on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Goucher finishes at 6-18 for a second-consecutive season, and a third time in the last six years.
