Goucher Women's Basketball Toppled By Drew
BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College falls to Drew University in Landmark Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.
Anise Williams (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) paced the Gophers with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season, but her third double-digit rebound contest in her sophomore campaign. Williams did most of her damage at the foul line, connecting on 8-for-11 at the freebie line. The sophomore, who now has seven 10+ rebound games and four double-doubles in her career, has scored double figures in six of her last seven games, 12 of 15 games in 2019-20 and 34 of 39 tilts in her career. Williams, who added four steals and two assists, is seven points from reaching 600 in her two years with the Gophers.
Kyani Quarles (Houston, Texas/Cristo Rey Jesuit) added 13 points, five rebounds, three steals. The freshman was 5-for-6 from the field and 3 of 5 from the free throw line for her second-straight double-figure point game. Quarles now has six games with 10 points or more with three each coming on the road and home. The three steals are a career high while she has hauled in five caroms 11 times in her freshman campaign.
Goucher took a 14-12 lead after the first quarter thanks to eight unanswered points after trailing 9-6. Alayna McFadden (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) tied the game at 9 on a triple at 4:51 before Williams handed the Gophers a 10-9 edge after making the front end of two free throws 51 seconds later. Williams then scored in the paint and Quarles capped the run with a basket in the paint at 1:23 for a 14-9 advantage. The Rangers scored the last three points of the quarter to make it a two-point game.
Drew took the lead early in the second quarter before Williams converted a traditional 3-point play at 8:45 to even the score at 17. The Rangers then scored the next seven points to take the lead for good en route to grabbing a 28-24 lead at halftime.
A 21-9 third quarter helped the Rangers extend the lead. The fourth quarter was closely contest with Drew taking the frame 14-12, but the Rangers came away with a 63-45 victory.
McFadden finished with nine points and nine rebounds.
Goucher concludes its two-game homestand on Wednesday against Juniata College. Game time is 7 p.m.
