Ranked Blue Jays Overpower Gophers After Competitive Start

BALTIMORE, MD - Goucher (4–4 overall, 1–3 conference) hosted the undefeated Blue Jays of Elizabethtown College (7–0 overall, 4–0 conference) in today's Landmark conference matchup. The Gophers remained competitive throughout the first quarter but ultimately fell to the No. 17–ranked Blue Jays, who controlled the remainder of the game.
The Blue Jays opened with a 5–0 run before a Nia Edens layup put Goucher on the board and sparked early momentum. Logan Davis followed with a jumper, and another Edens layup gave the Gophers their first lead, 6–5. The teams traded baskets until a three-pointer from Nia George created a 12–7 lead. Elizabethtown responded to tie the game at 12–12 with 3:48 left. Edens added six more points, but the Blue Jays closed the quarter strong, sending the game into the second tied at 18–18.
Elizabethtown struck first again in the second quarter, building a four-point lead before a jumper from Leila Townsend brought Goucher within two at 22–20. A three-pointer from Chyanne Harris cut into the deficit with 5:21 left in the quarter, but the Gophers hit a scoring drought while the Blue Jays pushed ahead 35–23. Davis scored in the lane, and Aniya McDaniel added a free throw, but Elizabethtown carried a 39–26 lead into halftime.
The Blue Jays continued their momentum out of the break, holding Goucher scoreless for most of the third quarter while extending their score to 51–26. An Edens basket with 4:50 remaining stopped the run, but the Gophers were unable to build on it and entered the fourth trailing 60–28.
Goucher opened the final quarter with back-to-back scores from Davis and Edens to make it 60–32. Harris then forced a turnover that led to a Blue Jay timeout with 5:56 remaining. The Gophers added baskets from Davis and Edens, narrowing the gap to 68–36 before Elizabethtown reached 70 with 3:31 left. Neither team scored again, and the Blue Jays closed out a 70–36 win.
Edens led the Gophers with 19 points and three steals, while Davis led the team with 10 total rebounds, six on the defensive end and four on the offensive end.
Elizabethtown finished with the shooting advantage, hitting 41.8% in the game, to Goucher's 26.2%. The Blue Jays also controlled the free-throw line, going 10–14, while the Gophers shot 1–10. Goucher held the advantage from beyond the arc, shooting 23.1% compared to Elizabethtown's 22.2%.
The Gophers return to action on Dec. 20, hosting Delaware Valley in a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m.
